Athlone 2009 Sugarcraft Course

Tuesday, November 17th, 2009

We are into our 8th week in Athlone IT and we have two classes of great sugarcrafters.

In the last two weeks we made sugarpaste novelty animals and sugarpaste flowers.  The students brought in their own cakes tonight and created flowers and novelties for them.

Here are a few of their cakes from tonight.

Next week we are getting into the Christmas spirit, covering our fruit cakes with almond paste and making some novelty Christmas cake toppers.

Making a Sugarpaste Ghost

Wednesday, October 21st, 2009

During our 4th basic sugarpaste course in Athlone IT we made a few Halloween cake toppers.

This is a sugarpaste ghost being made step by step.

Using the sugarpaste create a short column which will be the body of the ghost.

Pinch the sides of the body to make arms.

Roll out a round thin piece of white sugarpaste and cover the body fully.

Using a toothpick dipped in black sugarpaste colour, dot two eyes to finish.

Now place your ghost on your covered Halloween cake and write your message.

Cannaboe Sugarpaste Novelty Animals Workshop

Friday, July 24th, 2009

We had our novelty animal workshop on Tuesday last in The Food Hub in Drumshanbo during the Joe Mooney Summer School Festival.

The kids made some fantastic animals.   We had white crocodiles, snakes, mice, dogs, cats, and even a mini person.

Here are a few photos from the class.  To see the rest click on Flickr.

Cannaboe Cupcake for Kids workshop

Monday, July 20th, 2009

Just back from a workshop for kids in The Food Hub in Drumshanbo.

We had 21 children between the ages of 8-13.  They baked well over 100 cupcakes and had great fun making little sugarpaste toppings for them.

The workshop is one of many all week which is running in conjunction with the Joe Mooney Summer School in Drumshanbo.  My part in it is sponsored by the Taste 4 Success Food Skillnet.  The Cupcake workshop ran today and we are having a Novelty Sugarpaste  Animal workshop tomorrow.  I’m looking forward to seeing all the kids again tomorrow morning at 11am.

I had great help from Aoife, Brian and Hannah.  I hope everyone enjoyed the baking and icing as much as we did.

Athlone Advanced Sugarcraft Course Weeks 9 & 10

Monday, March 30th, 2009

The beautiful flowers presented by my class at the end of our 10 weeks.

Thank you so much, the flowers, and the card, were a lovely thought.  Thank you Eileen also for the lovely card.   I really enjoyed my 10 weeks both before and after Christmas.  It was great to see you all improving so quickly and enjoying something I have for many years.

I have to put the last two weeks of the course together. I didn’t have my camera with me for Week 9.

Week 9 – We made chocolate paste. This is a paste made from melted chocolate, glucose syrup and water which when mixed together and left overnight can be rolled out and used for covering cakes and making flowers.
I made some up the day before the course so the girls could actually use it and we made a selection of milk, white and dark chocolate flowers from it.

Week 10 – The last week was used to allow the girls to make whatever type of cake they wanted. So we ended up with a wide variety of novelty cakes from couches, handbags, cars, books and teddies.
Here is a selection of some of them.

I have finally got most of my course photos together as a set on our Flickr site.    Have a look and see if you can find yours.  Keep in touch and enjoy sugarcrafting.
